UGC Videos for Shopify: Collect and Publish
UGC videos for Shopify are customer or creator videos used to show a product in context. A useful workflow covers more than collecting files: you need to know what each clip demonstrates, where you may use it, and whether it still matches the product you sell.
Use the following process to move from a submission to a storefront placement. It is a suggested operating workflow, not a report of results from a customer campaign.
Ask for a specific demonstration
Start with a question shoppers already ask. “Show what fits in the side pocket” gives a customer a clearer task than “Tell us why you love the bag.” Offer room for an honest answer rather than scripting praise.
Ask after the customer has had a reasonable chance to use the item. The right timing depends on the product and delivery experience. A tool that needs assembly and a ready-to-wear accessory do not have the same usage timeline.
Explain the intended destination before requesting a file. A product page, a social post and a paid advertisement are different uses. If you need a commissioned shoot instead of a customer submission, use the UGC creator selection guide.
Keep an approval record with every file
A social tag or a downloadable clip is not an adequate internal record of permission. Before publishing, keep the creator’s agreement and the approved uses with the asset. Clarify questions while the creator can still answer them.
A practical asset record includes:
- Creator or customer name and a working contact.
- Original file and source link, if there is one.
- Product and version shown in the footage.
- Approved destinations, such as the storefront or named social channels.
- Duration of use and any restrictions on editing or reuse.
- Payment, gifted product or other relationship that may need disclosure.
- Approved caption, credit and disclosure wording.
- Review owner, approval date and a date to check the asset again.
This record helps the team find the agreement; it does not replace one. Avoid assuming that permission for an organic post also covers advertising or use by another brand.
Review the content before editing
Watch the original clip in full. Check that it depicts the product accurately and that any factual statement can be supported. Do not splice sentences into a testimonial the speaker did not give.
Check the background, other people in the frame and audio as part of the approval process. If music or third-party material creates an unresolved reuse question, ask for a clean version. Keep the original file so edits can be traced back to it.
For US-facing endorsements, the FTC explains that material connections, including payment or free products, can require clear disclosure with the endorsement. Its guidance also addresses disclosure inside videos. Review Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers when planning the presentation. Requirements depend on the context and market; a credit line alone is not a universal solution.
Edit for the shopping question
Keep the action that answers the question near the beginning. Add captions that preserve the meaning of the speaker’s words. Preview the result muted and at the size the widget will display.
Check whether product cards or player controls cover the caption or demonstration. Choose a representative thumbnail. Avoid a dramatic opening frame that promises something the clip never shows.
For example, a fictional skincare store could use a texture demonstration to show how a cream spreads. It should not turn that demonstration into an unsupported claim about treating a condition. The useful content is what the viewer can actually observe.
Publish to a relevant product or collection
Create a feed for the shopping context, attach the correct product and preview the shopper’s path. A general customer montage and a product-specific tutorial serve different purposes. Follow the SwipeUp feed walkthrough and the Shopify video implementation guide for placement checks.
After publishing, confirm that the video appears on the intended templates. Open its product panel, test the cart and check that any disclosure remains readable. Keep a list of every placement that uses the clip.
Review usefulness as well as views
Inspect video engagement, product interactions and the questions customers still ask. A high play count may reflect a strong thumbnail; it does not establish that the content resolved the buying question.
Use a defined experiment if you want to assess a change in store outcomes. Record competing explanations such as promotions and traffic changes. Schedule a content check when products, packaging, rights or offers change, using the UGC planning checklist.
Common questions
Can paid creator content count as UGC?
People use the term for both customer submissions and commissioned creator footage. Label the source and commercial relationship accurately. Paid production should not be presented as an unsolicited customer review.
Can I publish a video that tagged my brand?
Do not treat the tag as your permission record. Confirm the intended reuse and keep the agreement before placing the clip on your storefront.
Do I need a large library before starting?
No. A small set of approved clips that answers distinct product questions is easier to place and maintain. Add more when you identify a missing explanation, rather than filling a feed for its own sake.
