SwipeUp vs Tolstoy: Shopify Video Apps Compared
SwipeUp and Tolstoy both offer shoppable video for Shopify. Start your comparison with the placement you need, the clips you already have and the usage you expect. A plan’s monthly price alone does not tell you whether it covers your store.
Disclosure: SwipeUp publishes this comparison. We checked public product listings and documentation on September 19, 2026. We have not run a controlled performance or conversion test between these apps. The selection guidance below is our assessment of those documented workflows.
Which app should you evaluate first?
Consider SwipeUp for an Online Store feed built from existing product demos or customer clips. Its documented workflow is to create a feed, add reels, attach catalog products and place a widget through the theme editor. The illustrated setup guide shows the steps you can check before installing.
Consider Tolstoy when your shortlist requires Shop App distribution, or when you also want to evaluate AI content creation and a shopping assistant. Its Shopify listing describes Shop App publishing; its product and plan guide distinguishes Player, AI Studio and AI Sales Agent. Check the subscription for each product you intend to use.
If all you need is one demonstration among a product’s photos, first check Shopify’s native product media. A separate feed may add work without solving your immediate problem.
Documented video workflows
| Decision | SwipeUp | Tolstoy |
|---|---|---|
| Storefront formats | Stories, Feed and Overlay | Galleries, carousels, stories, feeds and pop-ups |
| Shopping connection | Product tags on reels | Product tags and in-video add-to-cart |
| Reporting listed | Sales and views | Views, clicks, add-to-carts and attributed revenue |

For SwipeUp, use the feed walkthrough and product-page Stories instructions to check the installation path. For either app, preview a real product with variants and an unavailable item. A product tag is only useful when its destination matches what the shopper sees in the clip.
Prices: check both the plan and its meter
The following snapshot uses monthly USD prices in the Shopify App Store. Annual billing is a separate commitment; compare its billed total before selecting it.
| Published plan | SwipeUp | Tolstoy |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 750 views/month | Eligible 30-day trial listed; confirm ongoing access |
| First paid tier | Pro: $29/month | Starter: $12/month |
| Next tier | Scale: $59/month | Plus: $44/month |
| Higher tier | Shopify Plus: $99/month | Pro: $195/month |
Sources: SwipeUp plans and Tolstoy plans, checked September 19, 2026. Rows follow each listing’s order; they are not equivalent feature bundles.
Tolstoy lists 5,000, 20,000 and 100,000 monthly viewers for those paid tiers, with additional viewer charges. SwipeUp’s current pricing page provides its plan limits and annual totals. Do not assume a “viewer,” a “view” and a store session are the same billing unit.
Tolstoy’s public sources differ: its July 7 help article lists Player plans starting at $19/month, while the Shopify listing shows Starter at $12/month. The help article also discusses a different eligible trial period. We cannot establish which offer a particular account will receive from those pages alone. Confirm the price, publishing rights, trial end date and extra usage charges in the actual offer before approval.
A small pilot that makes the choice concrete
Use one product template, the same approved clips and the same device conditions for each candidate. Keep only one candidate’s widget active during a measurement so the two installations do not interfere. Write down the baseline before adding either app.
- Setup: record the steps needed to upload a clip, attach the correct product and publish the intended placement. Include a teammate’s handoff if someone else will maintain it.
- Shopping: open the player on a phone, choose a variant, check availability and continue to the cart. Test closing the player and resuming the page with a keyboard.
- Loading: compare several mobile measurements with the baseline. Use the same page and test settings; inspect both loading time and layout movement. A vendor’s performance claim does not replace your theme’s result.
- Reporting: locate the views, product actions and orders that each app reports. Record how each defines attribution before comparing numbers. A video-associated order alone does not prove that the video caused the purchase.
- Cost: estimate ordinary and campaign-month usage using the app’s billing unit. Note what happens at the limit: billing, a blocked placement or another behavior that the vendor confirms.
Define the decision before looking at the result: the placement must work, the purchase path must remain usable and the expected bill must fit your budget. Use our shoppable video testing guide to turn a promising placement into a measurable experiment.
Common comparison questions
Is SwipeUp always cheaper than Tolstoy?
No. The entry prices above do not support that claim, and the plans have different allowances and features. Compare the expected total for your workload and the specific offer available to your account.
Which app will be faster on my Shopify theme?
This comparison does not establish a winner. Use the same clips and placement in separate trials, then compare repeat measurements against the original page. Theme code, media and other apps can affect the result.
Can I move from one app to the other?
Plan a small manual pilot first. Keep your original video files, permissions and product mappings. Do not assume that feeds, styling, analytics history or attribution settings transfer automatically. Verify the replacement placement before removing the previous one.
